On the eve of the American invasion
of Iraq, a 13 year-old Kurdistan boy named Soran installs dishes and antennae
for local villages looking for news of Saddam. The devastation to the land
and people is revealed in the perspective of the children. The exquisitely
haunting mountains play backdrop to violence and tragedy, but at the same time
the heart and humor of the children is an undeniable force. Turtles Can
Fly was the Iranian entry to the 2004 Academy Award nominations for Best
Foreign Film.
Madison
Sunday,
November 13, 2:00pm
This father/son action drama is
based on the true story of the tiny town of Madison, Indiana and its legendary
come-from-behind win for the Gold Cup of hydroplane boat-racing. Set in
1971, Jim McCormick has left the dangers of flat-bottomed boat racing in favor
of a stable life for his family, but the lure of racing calls him back despite
the lack of sponsors and the dismal shape of the boat, the Miss Madison.
In addition to the thrills of boat racing, the film captures the spirit of
small-town America in the turbulent 1960s and 70s.
