OUR MISSION: To provide the Michigan City area population with basic skills taught by trained volunteer tutors. We tutor non-readers; persons wanting to improve basic reading, writing and math skills; and newcomers to the United States who want to learn English.
STUDENTS: We accept students of any age: children, teenagers, high school dropouts, adults. Students are interviewed by the literacy supervisor and then assigned an available tutor. Lessons usually are twice a week at the library for 1/2 to 1 hour per session.
TUTORS: We offer training in tutoring beginning readers, intermediate readers, pre-GED students, and English as a second language students. Tutor trainings are held at the library. Tutors do not have to have teaching experience but need a desire to help people, patience, and flexibility.
VOLUNTEER: Those wishing to tutor should call the Literacy Center at 219-873-3043 and ask to sign up. Background checks are done by us at no charge to the tutor but are required to work with students. WE CURRENTLY NEED TUTORS TO WORK WITH BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS. Support is provided through the Literacy Supervisor.
