By the end of 2008, more than 112 nationally known writers and poets had appeared at the library, including Joyce Carol Oates, Gwendolyn Brooks, Haki Madhubuti, Jane Hamilton, Catherine Ryan Hyde and Andrew Greeley. Writing Out Loud continues to attract the literary world's finest authors.

Candace
Fleming, Saturday, September 12, 7:30pm–Candace awarded herself the
Newbery Medal in fifth grade after scraping the gold sticker off the class copy
of The Witch of Blackbird Pond and pasting it onto her first novel–a
ten page, ten chapter mystery called Who Done It? She’s been collecting
awards herself ever since. Today, Candace is a versatile and acclaimed author of
more than twenty books for children and young adults including Muncha, Muncha,
Muncha and Boxes for Katje. Plus, she was born in Michigan City and
went to Marsh Elementary school until she was in the third grade!
Brad
Meltzer, Saturday, October 3, 7:30pm–
Brad Meltzer is the author of The New York Times bestsellers The Tenth
Justice, Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, and The Zero
Game. His newest novel is The Book of Lies. Meltzer also was one of
the co-creators of the TV show, Jack & Bobby– about two young
brothers, one of whom will one day grow up to be President. He is the author of
the critically acclaimed comic book, Identity Crisis, a murder mystery
featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. He’s been featured on The
Today Show, and in major publications including Time, USA Today, Vanity
Fair, Entertainment Weekly, and dozens of newspapers across the country.
Curtis
Crisler, Saturday, October 17, 7:30pm –Curtis
Crisler is a Cave Canem Fellow at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort
Wayne, where he is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. His book Tough
Boy Sonatas was published in 2007 and is also on Recorded Books. It is an
Eliot Rosewater 2008-09 award winner and winner of the Eric Hoffer Award.
Crisler has been published in Crab Orchard Review, Reverie, The Amistad,
and anthologies such as Our Common Suffering: Anthology of Poets in
Memoriam 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, Fingernails Across the Chalkboard: Poetry and
Prose on HIV/AIDS from the Black Diaspora, Only the Sea Keeps: Poetry of the
Tsunami, and The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South. Crisler is a
recipient of an Indiana Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Project Grant, an
artist at Soul Mountain Retreat, an artist at SAAW, and an artist for Words on
the Go. His work has appeared in such literary journals as The Fourth River
and Black Arts Quarterly. His chapbook, Burnt Offerings of a City,
won the Kathryn Young Chapbook Award. His new book, Pulling Scabs, is due
out later this year.
Harry
Mark Petrakis, Saturday,
November 7, 7:30pm–
Harry Mark Petrakis returns to the library 25 years after being the first ever Writing
Out Loud guest. At 86, he still is writing. His most recent books include, The
Shepherds of Shadows (2008) and The Hour of the Bell (2008). He has
written a screenplay, over 20 novels and for magazines including Atlantic
Monthly, Harper’s Bazaar, Saturday Evening Post. He has also written for
newspapers including The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.
He is currently a freelance writer making his home in the Indiana Dunes.
